Technical: Why Do People Leave (Bounce) Your Website?

What is Bounce Rate?

The percentage of visitors to your website who leave your site after viewing only one page. Your site’s bounce rate is important because it tells you how well people are — or more importantly, aren’t — engaging with your webpage’s content or user experience.

Look at Your Bounce Rate in Your Google Analytics

Bounce rate is calculated when someone visits a single page on your website and does nothing on the page before leaving. More specifically, a website’s bounce rate measures how many visitors leave a page without performing a specific action, such as buying something, filling out a form, or clicking on a link.

Look at this Google help topic Bounce Rate so you know which metrics to review in your Google Analytics account.

What is a good bounce rate?

26% to 40% is optimal

25% or lower: Something is probably broken
26-40%: Excellent
41-55%: Average
56-70%: Higher than normal, but could make sense depending on the website
70% or higher: Bad and/or something is probably broken

Why Do You Have a High Bounce Rate?

If you want to lower your bounce rate, you should consider what can negatively impact your bounce rate, including:

  • Slow page speed
  • Audio or video that plays automatically
  • Pop-ups
  • Too many ads
  • Unnecessary plug-ins
  • Bad navigation
  • Boring content
  • Outdated and ugly design website
  • Poor legibility and too many colors and distractions
  • Poor user experience
  • Spammy or untrustworthy site
  • SEO Title tags and meta descriptions that aren’t properly optimized
  • Blank pages and technical errors
  • Low-quality and confusing content
  • Pages that aren’t mobile-friendly
  • Improperly implemented Google Analytics setup
