How Every Generation Searches Online Differently (And Why Your Business Needs SEO, GEO, & AEO)

by Michelle Farrell

SEO is still crucial but alone isn't enough anymore. Here's how to show up where your customers are actually looking - by generation, platform, and intent.

The days of "just rank on Google, and you're good" are over. The search landscape has fractured across AI tools, social platforms, and traditional search engines, and different generations are living in completely different digital worlds. If your business isn't showing up where your customers are actually looking, you're invisible to them.

The Big Picture

The Numbers That Should Wake You Up

Before we dive into generations, here's the landscape right now, and it's moving fast.

  • 31% of Gen Z start their search on AI platforms or chatbots — not Google
  • 82% of Gen Z (ages 18–26) have used AI search tools at least occasionally
  • 14.2% conversion rate from AI search traffic vs. Google's 2.8% — that's 5× higher
  • 2B monthly users now engage with Google's AI Overviews globally

The Shift Is Happening Right Now

Gartner predicted traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 due to AI chatbots. The data from 2025 suggests that trajectory is on course. Google still dominates with ~90% market share — but how people use it is changing dramatically. About 50% of Google searches already include an AI-generated summary at the top, and that number is climbing.

Know Your Audience

How Each Generation Searches (And Where They Hang Out)

This is the most important thing you can internalize: different generations don't just use different apps — they have entirely different search mindsets. Here's the breakdown:

Gen Z

Ages 20–29 · Born 1997–2006

Gen Z doesn't "Google" things the way you might expect. They treat TikTok as a search engine, use AI chatbots for research, and trust peer recommendations over brand messaging. They're visual-first, speed-obsessed, and skeptical of traditional advertising.

How They Search:

  • 34% use AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) for search
  • TikTok is their #1 discovery engine for products, restaurants, and trends
  • YouTube (68%) and Instagram (65%) rank above traditional search
  • They use Google mainly as a "final verification" step
  • Highly visual — image and video search over reading text
  • 24% are already comfortable with AI agents shopping for them

Millennials

Ages 30–45 · Born 1981–1996

Millennials are the digital bridge generation. They grew up with Google and are fluent in social media, but they've been early adopters of AI tools too. They research deeply before buying and value authentic brand stories and reviews.

How They Search:

  • Balance Google search with AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Heavy users of Instagram and Facebook for product discovery
  • Strong YouTube research behavior — tutorials, reviews, comparisons
  • Use Reddit and review sites to vet decisions
  • Respond well to influencer content that feels authentic, not sales-y
  • Pinterest for lifestyle, home, and planning-type products

Gen X

Ages 46–61 · Born 1965–1980

Gen X is often overlooked in marketing, which is a mistake — they have significant purchasing power and are loyal customers. They're pragmatic searchers who want efficiency and trust established platforms, but they're also slowly warming up to AI tools.

How They Search:

  • 65% use AI tools occasionally, but strongly prefer Google
  • Facebook remains their top social platform
  • Email marketing works extremely well with this group
  • YouTube for product research and how-to content
  • Read full articles and blog posts — not just skimming
  • Trust reviews on Google, Yelp, and established sites

Google, Facebook, YouTube, Email, LinkedIn, Yelp / Reviews

Baby Boomers

Ages 62–80 · Born 1946–1964

Don't count boomers out,  they control a huge share of consumer spending and are actually adopting AI faster than most people expect, particularly through Google's AI Overviews (which they encounter without even realizing it's AI). They're loyal and trust-driven.

How They Search:

  • Most loyal to traditional Google search of any generation
  • 45% have used AI tools — and passive AI use (Google Overviews) is growing fast
  • Facebook is their dominant social platform
  • Trust word-of-mouth, local reputation, and reviews heavily
  • Respond to email and clear, direct website copy
  • Deloitte forecasts 49% passive AI (Google AI Overview) adoption by end of 2026

Strategy First

The #1 Rule: Know Who You're Talking To

You don't need to be on every platform. You need to be on the right ones, the ones where your actual customers live.

Before you spend another dollar or hour on social media, you need to answer one question: How old is your core customer? Not your dream customer. Your actual, paying customer.

Quick Audience Audit — Ask Yourself:

  • What's the average age of my best customers?
  • Where do they say they found me? (Ask them!)
  • What platforms do they mention in conversation?
  • Am I assuming my audience is young because I am?
  • Have I looked at my Google Analytics demographics lately?
  • Am I chasing trends that don't match my customer base?

A luxury estate attorney whose clients are 55+ doesn't need a TikTok strategy. A boutique skincare brand targeting 25-year-olds doesn't need to pour resources into Facebook. Platform fit = audience fit.

Platform Best For Primary Age Range Search / Discovery Type
TikTok Discovery, viral reach, trends 18–34 Interest-based, visual, social proof
Instagram Visual brands, lifestyle, product 18–44 Hashtags, Reels, Explore, shopping
YouTube Research, tutorials, reviews 18–60+ Intent-based, long-form trust building
Facebook Community, local, events, ads 35–65+ Word of mouth, groups, marketplace
LinkedIn B2B, professional services 28–55 Professional credibility, thought leadership
Pinterest Home, fashion, food, planning 25–45 Aspirational, visual, evergreen content
Google Search Intent-based, all ages All High-intent, problem-solving
AI Tools (ChatGPT, etc.) Research, comparisons, recommendations 18–45 (growing) Conversational, synthesized answers

The SEO Truth

SEO Still Works. But It's No Longer Enough.

I'm an SEO consultant in Los Angeles. You can trust me when I say this with full confidence: SEO is not dead, but it has a co-pilot now. If you've been putting all your eggs in the Google basket, you're leaving a lot of visibility (and revenue) on the table.

SEO Still Absolutely Works

  • Google still processes billions of searches daily and holds ~90% market share
  • High-intent traffic from search converts well
  • Local SEO is more powerful than ever for service businesses
  • Your Google Business Profile is your digital storefront
  • Long-form, authoritative content builds trust with both humans and AI
  • Backlinks and domain authority still matter
  • Being cited in AI answers starts with good SEO fundamentals... "Good GEO is good SEO"

Why It's No Longer Enough Alone

  • AI Overviews are answering questions without requiring a click to your site
  • Zero-click searches hit 93% in Google's AI Mode
  • Younger generations are skipping Google entirely for discovery
  • Your competitor might be showing up in ChatGPT answers — are you?
  • Social media is now a search engine for millions of people
  • Click-through rates are declining even for top-ranking pages
  • AI tools surface brand reputation, reviews, and mentions — not just rankings

The New SEO Playbook - Do All of These:

  • Keep doing traditional SEO — it still works and it feeds AI visibility too. Brad Schaeffer Strategic Partnerships Development Manager, Search & Gemini Partnerships at Google said on a webinar I attended on April 28th, 2026 "Good GEO is good SEO"
  • Optimize for AI citations: Write clear, authoritative, well-structured content that AI tools want to reference
  • Use schema markup (FAQ, HowTo, Article) to help AI understand your content
  • Answer questions conversationally — write like people actually talk: "What's the best…", "How do I…", "How much does…"
  • Get mentioned: PR, guest posts, reviews, and brand mentions help AI tools learn who you are
  • Keep content fresh: AI models prioritize up-to-date, credible information
  • Track AI visibility — not just Google rankings. Search for your own brand and services in ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Optimize your Google Business Profile — reviews, photos, posts, hours, and Q&A all matter
  • Create short-form video content — it gets indexed, and it feeds the social search algorithms
  • Build your email list — own your audience, not just your rankings
  • Build your reputation! Today, people decide before they ever contact you: They check reviews. They compare listings. They look for trust signals. And if you don’t win their confidence… they choose your competitor.

AI & Search

How People Are Using AI to Find Your Products & Services

Right now, your customers are searching in three very different ways:

  1. On Google: Where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) decides who wins.
  2. On Perplexity and Gemini: Where GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) decides who gets cited.
  3. On ChatGPT: Where AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) decides who gets recommended.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity aren't replacing Google — they're becoming a different kind of search. Here's what you need to know about how they're actually used:

Search Type Where People Go
Product comparisons & recommendations AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
Initial product research Google and Bing
Discovery-based shopping TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest
Direct product search (ready to buy) Amazon, Walmart, Target
General information Google (still dominant)
Local services (plumber, dentist, designer) Google Maps, Yelp, Google Search
How-to & tutorials YouTube, TikTok
Community validation Reddit, Facebook Groups, TikTok comments

Why This Matters for Your Business

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best web designer in Santa Monica" or "who should I hire for SEO near me" — you want to come up. That happens when you have strong reviews, active online presence, published content, and a website that clearly explains what you do and who you serve. AI tools are reading the internet and forming opinions about your brand. Make sure those opinions are good ones.

Your Next Steps

Your Action Plan to Stay Visible in 2026

  • Know your audience's age. Pull your analytics. Look at your customer data. Let the numbers guide your platform strategy.
  • Be where your audience is — not where you think they should be or where you personally spend time.
  • Keep your SEO strong. It still works and improves your AI discoverability as well.
  • Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile. Reviews, photos, posts, hours, services offered — do it all.
  • Create content that AI tools want to cite. Clear, authoritative, well-organized, conversational.
  • Pick 2–3 social platforms max and show up consistently instead of spreading thin across all of them.
  • Use short-form video on at least one platform — it feeds both social search and Google.
  • Give your customers a great experience, earn their review, earn their referral, if you don't, your competitors will!
  • Ask happy clients for Google reviews. AI tools read them. So does everyone else. Do not assume that if you have 1,000 reviews, you are good, if your last review was 6 months ago, those reviews mean nothing, so keep asking for fresh reviews.
  • Respond to your reviews; it builds trust. Make sure you respond on Google, Yelp, TrustPilot, and everywhere people review you.
  • Survey your customers and listen to your negative reviews, fix what frustrates them and take action.
  • Search for yourself in ChatGPT and Perplexity. See what comes up. Then work to improve it.
  • Build your email list. Algorithms change. Platforms come and go. Your list is yours forever.
  • Send personalized emails to your customers, triggered by their behavior, not your calendar. Sending the right message, at the right time, is crucial.  Test the best time to send your email. Reference your location, the service you offer, and add local context.  If you have multiple locations, it is very important to do this specifically for the location where your customer is located.
